Bricoleur Sarah Beth Woods and Fatimata Traore
Azimuth projects is pleased to present Bricoleur: a collaborative, interactive fiber installation and hair braiding experience featuring Sarah Beth Woods and Fatimata Traore. Woods produces sculptural works made of brightly colored hair extensions, fabric, yarn, and chains. Traore is a hair stylist with over 20 years of African hair braiding experience. These two artists have come together to create an experience that bridges sculptural materials and the craft of hair braiding. Come out on Saturday September 6th from 6-10pm (2704 N. Whipple St. 60647). Hair braiding is first come first serve with a suggested $10 donation. Jeloff rice with chicken and vegetables will be served in tasting portions.
Sarah Beth Woods is a Chicago-based artist whose practice involves the deconstruction and reconstruction of everyday materials as a means to explore beauty culture and femininity. Woods received her BFA from Northern Illinois University in 2005 and her MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2012.
Fatimata Traore is a native of Mali who immigrated to the United States in 2001. Traore is an entrepreneur based in Calumet Park. She is an active member of the AMAMAC Malian association in Chicago, a member of the APAC African Political Action Committee, board member of Mali Relief, and the president of Illinois Association of Hair Braiders since 2010.
